Googl
Googl Research and Development is a company founded by Club Alpha in AWTeen, circa 2005, to develop new building techniques and methods of reducing cell space usage. It is run by Demon Dog, who adopted the job title Supreme Commander from Club Alpha.
Etymology
The word Googl (pronounced goy gull (as of quite recently)) was derived from googol, referring to the large number of buildings in Googl II and the rate they were being built.
Googl is an inclusive term referring to Googl Research and Development, marked settlements, outposts, embassies, offices, graveyards, waste dumps, bunkers, and workplaces.
History
Googl was once a tourist town under a tiny hill. After an encounter with vandals a makeshift above-ground city was constructed nearby. Retroactively named Googl II to distinguish it from the destroyed town, it came to have transportation and economic qualities on par with a small village, and a population of 6. In the latest stage of development, before its residents immigrated to become citizens, the Club Alpha Pyramid was built and used for several weeks.

Googl Pyramid
The Googl Pyramid and it's surrounding structures form the core research and development areas, as well as the headquarters of Googl R&D. Once a vibrant hub of enlightenment, it is now a wretched hive of scum and villainy, and also a thrift store and landfill. It is located near Googl 10, a failed attempt at a planned and enclosed community, and west of Googl's HQ and Ground Zero.
Facilities
- Alternate Joint Command Center: The heavily fortified bunker is located underneath a perfectly ordinary café, which is buried in a mountain far north of most of Googl. It devolved from a simple, practical fallout shelter into a parody of at least three movies. Internal roadworks allow for the storage of vehicles during emergency management operations.
- Vault 386: The vault connected to the AJCC provided data storage and shelter for high priority intelligence work during the wartime that never happened.
- GETS: The Googl Expansive Tunnel System lies 200 meters below ground, providing shelter and food storage for emergency management.
- Vault 256: GETS living area, fallout shelter, data storage.
- Googl Confyramid: Googl operates a great many conference centers, including this perfectly ordinary one that contains absolutely no secret rooms because insufficient time was given to complete construction.
- Googl Complex: Located somewhere in AWTeen, this is the latest in a long line of identical glass pyramids and science labs. Operated by Demon Dog.
- Googl Commyramid: Command and diplomatic center for conducting military and political functions. It never fulfilled its intended purpose as mixing politics and military operations was found to be detrimental to one or both fields.
- Googl International Conference Center: The giant box shaped building south of the Googl Mountain, for meetings. A state of the art digital intercom allows for colorful distractions while distinguished guests speak about planned improvements to the conference center.
- Googl Mountain: Also "Googl HQ". This is the home of the KARMA supercomputer, and the original Googl R&D Headquarters. The user interface design team worked tirelessly to fill the available floor space with user interfaces. Several offices remain inside.
- The KARMA Supercomputer: This machine uses the camera command introduced in v4.1 to change between different menus. This allows the computer to fit in many cells, allowing the entire visibility range to be packed with computer substrate. This prototype is limited to about 10 submenus.
- Avatar Animation Tester: A 10x10 pad with test dummies, rigged for seq command (v4.2) testing.
- Bomb Shelter: A heavily fortified fallout shelter that lay under 60 meters of packed earth and was completely indestructible. The fallout shelter was destroyed when the heavy fortifications collapsed under the weight of 60 meters of packed earth.
- DaBean's Calculator: DaBean was commissioned, at his expense, to build a calculator that would notionally feature the animate command. It was built in less than a month, northeast of Googl Mountain, and is capable of selectively revealing the answers to problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of single digit decimal numbers. World leaders hail this achievement as an important step towards lasting peace.
- Googl University: West of HQ, down several paths, is a campus with several purpose-built classrooms.
- The Black Sun: On the campus; a scaled-down version of the famous virtual property.
Common Construction Motifs
- Pyramids: Pyramids play a crucial role in architectural design at Googl facilities, as their distinctive shape provides strong brand recognition and feature in some kick-ass music videos.
- Tunnels: Provide access to maintenance areas and shelters. Built on Cartesian axes from many builds, they extend over tens of kilometers.
- Shelters: The primary goal of Googl's R&D operation is to find new ways of building under the constraints imposed by the world server. Dense, enclosed spaces with hotlinked multimedia allow Active Worlds to act as an interface for real-world systems and other online services from one location, without the need for constant walking or driving between different facilities. Expanding underground keeps the horizon visible above ground at all times, so potential investors feel less claustrophobic.
- Outposts: Outposts were numbered buildings, delicately perched in the cracks between properties in several public building worlds. They are festooned with radio antennas, sensing equipment, and a sense of proportionality commensurate with the sheer scale of a California sized virtual world with a lifetime population of less than 250,000.
