MacOSX
Running ActiveWorlds 6.4+ on Mac OS X 10.8 and later.
Please note, currently there is no free Wine support for Mac OS X 10.15 alias 'Cataline' and later. Currently Codeweavers offer with Crossover v19.1 a solution for Cataline for little costs only.
Currently, the open source project Wine for Mac (free version of the Windows Emulation) has been suspended. Please check out with Crossover v19.1.
Everything below applies to the older free open source of Wine only.
Prerequirements
- Install all available Software Updates from Apple.
- Apple XQuartz 2.7.9 [1]
XQuartz is the GUI interface for Unix and Linux like operating system.
- Wine 5.0 or later [2].
Wine emulates Microsoft Windows on Intel based Mac OS-X, Unix and Linux Systems.
Description
- If Apple's XQuartz isn't already installed on your Mac, go to
https://www.xquartz.org/releases/XQuartz-2.7.9.html
to get the recent version. Follow the standard Mac installer dialogs for XQuartz. Depending on your security settings, your Mac might ask for an installation password. Note, later XQuartz versions may fail in font-smoothing on MacOS +10.12.
- If Wine 5.0 or later is not yet installed on your Mac, go to
https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/download.html
download and install the recent stable version.
Follow the standard Mac installer dialogs for Wine. When Wine asks for the installation scope, select "Install for myself only", to avoid higher level provisions requirements. Depending on your security settings, your Mac might ask for an installation password. The Wine App will install to the HOME/Applications folder, it will not install as global App, if you followed the suggestion above.
When Wine starts the very first time, it will create a prefix, which is located at HOME/.wine . Wine may also ask to install Mono and Gecko. The AW Browser does not need any of these addition packages.
- Finally, download the Activeworlds Installer from
https://www.activeworlds.com/downloads.php
(or the link that was given to you by your universe / galaxy provider) and run (double click) the installer. It will unpack into the folder HOME/.wine/device_c/<name of your universe> . Optionally create a shortcut from aworld.exe onto your Desktop, or anywhere else you find it easily, and start this shortcut.
Once you are fine, move all 3 installers you had downloaded before into the Trash Bin.
Notes
A known issue with some versions of Wine may create a .lnk file on Mac's Desktop, but Wine actually would not launch when this file was double clicked. Safely delete this link (.lnk extension), if it's in your way.
In case HOME/.wine does not show up in the Finder, set it to show hidden subfolders. Consult your Apple Manual for details.
