DirectX files are a type of object that is compatible with the Active Worlds Browser. They are the "new kid on the block" with their introduction into the browser being fairly recent. These files allow the creation of more modern features such as skinned avatars. Many current 3D modeling programs support saving objects directly as .X, either through built in means or with the installation of a plug-in exporter.
