The ability to create within the Active Worlds browser relies upon having the basic building blocks which are assembled into larger, more complicated things. These pieces can range from primitive shapes to full structures, depending upon their intended purpose within a world environment.

Further modifications can be carried out in-world with other techniques such as object scripting.

Each of the aforementioned object types has it's own advantages and disadvantages, but no particular format tends to be a winner over other formats.

Renderware files are typically small in size, and can be easily edited with a simple text editor. While this provides accessibility for editing and touch-ups, there isn't a large backing of this file type from major software producers. As a result you will generally have to create the object in one program then convert it into Renderware.

TrueSpace cob files have been supported for quite some time, as an alternative to the aging Renderware format. Commonly used for avatars and other more complex objects, these files are still seen throughout the Active Worlds universe. This particular file type is generally limited to the TrueSpace modeling software.

DirectX files are the "new kid on the block" with their introduction into the browser being fairly recent. These files allow the creation of more modern features such as skinned avatars. Many current 3D modeling programs support saving objects directly as .X, either through built in means or with the installation of a plug-in exporter.
